AI Experts vs Everyone Else
I recently stumbled on a new Pew Research report called "How the U.S. Public and AI Experts View Artificial Intelligence." The researchers basically wanted to understand how Americans' views of AI compare with the views of experts in the field.
The divide was so stark I had to ask AI (thanks, Claude) build a dashboard to visualize it.
What we're looking at isn't just a knowledge gap - it's almost two entirely different relationships with technology…
Here's what I thought was interesting:
🤖 Experience Gap:
98% of AI experts have used chatbots vs. only 33% of the general public (I wonder what the 2% of experts are up to...)
Among users, 61% of experts find them extremely/very helpful vs. 33% of the public
👀 The Perception Gap:
79% of experts think Americans interact with AI constantly/multiple times daily
Only 27% of Americans think they do
🚀 The Optimism Gap:
76% of experts think AI is more likely to benefit them personally vs. 24% of the public
56% of experts think AI will have positive impact on U.S. over next 20 years vs. 17% of the public
Experts think AI would outperform humans in driving: 51% vs. 19%
Experts think AI would be better at customer service: 42% vs. 19%
Experts believe AI would make better loan decisions: 41% vs. 19%
Experts think AI would be better at medical diagnosis: 41% vs. 26%
My question is: how do we bridge a gap when one side doesn't even know they're already using the technology?..
